Run a cleaning cycle with water only through the group head after soaking the screen. This keeps the boiler and internal passages clear of buildup.

Monthly & Longer Intervals

Descale the boiler every 2–4 weeks, depending on water hardness. Most Rancilio machines have a specific descale procedure — your manual will detail whether you run a commercial descaling solution through the group head and steam wand, or remove and soak components. Hard water is the enemy of espresso machines; if you have mineral-heavy tap water, use filtered or distilled water, or descale more frequently.

Check the rubber gasket (the ring sealing the group head) every few months. If it becomes hard or cracked, shots may leak around the portafilter, and it will need replacement — a simple swap that your manual or a technician can guide you through.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting

Low or No Pressure

If your shots pour too fast and taste weak, the most common culprit is under-tamping (not compressing the coffee grounds firmly enough into the basket). Use 30 pounds of downward pressure and twist slightly to level the tamp. If tamping is solid, the gasket may be worn or the basket may be damaged. A bent or pitted basket won't seal properly. No Water or Very Slow Water Flow
